While crafting a clear, coherent message is essential to successful communication, so too is attentive listening. In our multicultural and multilingual world, “listening past the accent” is a critical skill to learn for mutual understanding.

I was struck by Judy Lindenberger’s insights into gender listening styles that appeared in the April issue of MidJersey Business. They were right on point. Her comments touched on the wonders of language. If used well, it can make a world of difference. Often, however it is misused, and an opportunity is lost.
It is no secret the our age is marked by an onrushing tide of information. Therefore it is critical to take great care in crafting a message. That is the only hope of having what you are expressing absorbed by your audience, whatever their listening tendencies may be.
